Editors Shriver (history, Georgia Southern Univ.) and Leonard (dean, Divinity Sch., Wake Forest Univ.) introduce their work by observing that religious controversy, while sometimes discouraging, is also "illustrative of lively and creative process and structure." Their reference work captures some of that process in approximately 350 signed entries, written by religion or history scholars and ranging from a few paragraphs to eight pages. Diversity is evident in the wide range of subjects, e.g., Methodists, Baptists, hyper-Calvinism, Marian devotion, Lubavitch, and Wicca, as well as religious aspects of academic freedom and family values. Considering its theme, the volume is remarkably unbiased; for instance, the entry for homosexuality begins "Is it a sin or a special grace?" and offers scriptures and interpretations supporting both views. The usual weaknesses of edited works are evident here. Some entries are oversimplified (e.g., abolitionism) or do not reflect the most recent scholarship (e.g., Nell Painter's recent work on Sojourner Truth is not identified), and better cross-referencing, e.g., from "snake handling" to "serpent handling," would also have been helpful. In addition, many of the subjects are covered elsewhere. Still, what makes this work unique and useful, in addition to its focus on controversy, is the inclusion of separate entries for topics that tend to get buried within broader topics in other reference works. This new edition updates and expands the original, solid 1997 work into two volumes on an important aspect of American history. The editors are religion scholars at Wake Forest University (N.C.), and the 60 contributors to the 400 signed articles are from an array of academic and faith institutions. The wide-ranging entries cover people, movements, concepts, and positions, capturing where those subjects intersect religion with philosophy, public policy, economics, and the wider civil society. Biography entries often bring forward lesser-known but important women and men from our religious history. Most articles average one to two pages, but some are as long as a dozen pages and include pertinent documents (such as a narrative or transcript of a court case). Black-and-white illustrations enhance the work visually. There is inevitable duplication in some entries, but, overall, they stand on their own. The writing is uniformly clear, providing an overview as well as an in-depth look at the topic. Complicated or divisive controversies are explained in a balanced way, and factual data is accurate. Readers will gain an objective understanding of major regional and national issues, which often reflect or parallel a larger global story. Many entries are updated to 2012, and the extensive bibliography includes recent works. Bold cross-references in the text, see also references, and a list of resources at the end of each entry are helpful in exploring topics further. There is an accurate and thorough index.
